Following an international search, Dr. Daniel Nützel has been appointed Director of the Max Kade Center and the Hoyt-Reichmann Scholar of German-American Studies and German Language and Culture effective August 1, 2009.
The Max Kade German-American Center, an affiliate of the Institute for American Thought in the IU School of Liberal Arts, is a center supporting German-American Studies through research, teaching, and service.
Nützel has authored numerous articles on colonial German dialects spoken in the US and the Czech Republic as well as the forthcoming volume The East Franconian Dialect of Haysville, Indiana: A Study in Language Death (Edition Vulpes). Having also recently edited a dictionary of the German-Bohemian dialect of New Ulm, MN, Nützel is poised to be actively involved in the Center’s publishing program and to coordinate educational and cultural activities and exchanges between the campus and city. Most recently an assistant professor at the Institut für Germanistik of the Universität Regensburg in Germany, he will also serve as an Associate Professor of German in the Department of World Languages and Cultures.
The Hoyt-Reichmann Chair was founded through the generosity of Drs. Giles and Dolores Hoyt and Drs. Ruth and Eberhard Reichmann to advance German-American Studies at IUPUI, in Indiana, and beyond. Drs. Hoyt and Drs. Reichmann share a common interest in German and German Diaspora studies. They created the Hoyt-Reichmann Chair in 2001 during IUPUI’s Campaign for the Future.
“We are extraordinarily fortunate to have the Hoyt-Reichmann Chair and the Max Kade Center as part of the School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI, and very proud to welcome Dr. Nützel into that Chair and Directorship,” said Liberal Arts Dean William Blomquist of the appointment. “His training, interests, and experience made him the best candidate to fulfill these important and prestigious positions.”
At the Max Kade Center, Professor Nützel will succeed Dr. Claudia Grossmann, who served as interim director during the 2008-2009 academic year.
