in
Historic New Harmony, Indiana
April 22-25, 2010
The 34th Annual Symposium of the Society for German-American Studies will be held in New Harmony, Indiana, at the Conference Center of the New Harmony Inn.
HISTORY:
In 1814, German Pietists led by Father George Rapp left their Pennsylvania colony of Harmony and founded New Harmony on the Wabash, not far from its junction with the Ohio River. The utopian religious community flourished, but after ten years the Harmonists elected to return to Pennsylvania, where they founded their third town, Economy. They left behind a spiritual legacy that is still cultivated in New Harmony today. Many of the original Harmonist buildings remain, and docent-led tours of the town provide insight into what life was like for those German pioneers on the Indiana frontier.
