Son of a pastor, Wilhelm Hey studied theology at the University of Jena and Göttingen. In 1827, he became court preacher at Gotha, where his preaching attracted large audiences. Hey wrote poetry for children, includin Fabeln für Kinder (Tales for Children).

Alle Jahre Wieder (Every Year the Christ Child)

Words by Wilhelm Hey (1789-1854). Translated from the German by Harriet R. Spaeth, 1885.
Music by Johann C. H. Rink (1770-1846).

Alle Jahre wieder
kommt das Christuskind
auf die Erde nieder,
wo wir Menschen sind.

Kehrt mit seinem Segen
ein in jedes Haus,
geht auf allen Wegen
mit uns ein und aus.

Ist auch mir zur Seite,
still und unerkannt,
dass es treu mich leite
an der lieben Hand.

As each happy Christmas
Dawns on earth again,
Comes the holy Christ Child
To the hearts of men.

Enters with His blessing
Into every home,
Guides and guards our footsteps,
As we go and come.

All unknown, beside me,
He will ever stand,
And will safely lead me
With His own right hand.
