Many sources mark the beginning of German immigration to the 1693 founding of Germantown in Pennsylvania, though there is ome evidence of earlier German immigrants (see Appendix 19-J). German immigration has been continuous ever since, but it peaked for the first time in the middle of the 19th century. For this reason, 1850 was chosen for the activity.
