• King Friedrich Wilhelm III of Prussia orders the union of the Lutheran and Reformed churches in Prussia. Other German rulers follow his example. A number of Germans are so upset by this decision that they decide to move to America.

1848
• Revolutions take place in many German states in an attempt to set up republics. By 1849, however, most of the attempts have failed. Many Forty-eighters (liberals who fought against the monarchies) emigrate to America.
