Carl Barus (1823-1908) came to Indianapolis from Cincinnati to serve as the director of the Maennerchor in 1882. Twenty-four years earlier, he had been the conductor for the National Saengerfest which was held in Indianapolis. Under his direction the Maennerchor performed operas and other major works (most of them by German composers). They also performed in song festivals across the United States, from Buffalo to New Orleans. Barus organized the first May Music Festival in the city, a tradition that continued until 1898, two years after Barus ended his time with the Maennerchor.
