BRUNO SCHMITZ AND RUDOLF SCHWARZ

The German influence in the arts of Indianapolis is plainly evident. The Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument in the very heart of the city was created by two German artists, Bruno Schmitz and Rudolf Schwarz. . . . The competition for an architect for the monument was world-wide, but in 1887 Bruno Schmitz of Koblenz, Germany, received the commission. To build the monument, Schmitz had to come to Indianapolis, and he brought with him a 21-year-old sculptor, Rudolf Schwarz. . . . While Schwarz made his home in Indianapolis until his death in 1912, he sculptured many statues throughout the Midwest. . . . The [Soldiers' and Sailors'] Monument is located on the circle of Indianapolis and is one of the most imposing works of art in the state.
