This pamphlet was written by Clemens Vonnegut, Sr., a Forty-eighter who settled in Indianapolis in 1851. The German-language version was published in 1890, and the English translation came out in 1900. Vonnegut was a founding member of the Freethinker
Society in Indianapolis, and his writings reflect the Freethinkers' beliefs, including the equality of the sexes, workers' rights, and a rejection of religion not based on the scientific viewpoint.
