Athenaeum name change newspaper articles, 1918

The entry of the United States in World War I put pressure on German-Americans to prove their loyalty to the U.S. Many German-American organizations and institutions responded by adopting new names. Das Deutsche Haus, home of the Socialer Turnverein and the Musikverein, was rechristened "The Athenaeum" on February 22, 1918. Reports in Indianapolis newspapers hailed the change as further proof of the loyalty of local German-Americans.
