Adolf Scherrer (1847-1925) was a Swiss-German architect who designed a number of important Indianapolis buildings, including the Maennerchor Hall, City Hospital, and the Elks Club Building. The structure he designed for the Independent Turnverein at 902 N. Meridian Street still stands and is an apartment building today. Scherrer's crowning moment came when he was appointed supervising architect of the Indiana State Capitol in 1880 after the death of the original architect, Edwin May. The changes Scherrer made to May's original design resulted in the building having a more purely classical style.
