Thomas Bird Mosher, a publisher and literary scholar, operated a private press from 1891 until
his death in 1923. Known for his exceedingly high standards of quality and his penchant for ignoring copyright
and ownership issues (which earned him the nickname, the 'Portland Pirate'), Mosher published over 770 different
imprints during the 32-year operation of his press. This book, produced by a collaboration of the University of Massachusetts Press and the private Gehenna Press, includes hand-mounted facsimiles of the titlepages of 19 Mosher books, recreating as closely as possible the look and feel of the original paperstock (and vellum). The paper used for the text block is hand-laid and imported from Italy. The titlepage features an original woodcut print created by Leonard Baskin, a graphic artist and director of the Gehenna Press. A Check List of the Publications of Thomas Bird Mosher of Portland, Maine was printed in a limited run of 500 copies, of which this is number 167. |
