The SGAS Year 2000 Symposium will be held in Bremerhaven, Germany at the Hochschule Bremerhaven (University of Applied Sciences) which is in the city center. It is a 5 minute walk to the German Maritime Museum; 6 minutes to the Columbus Center (shopping mall); 8 minutes to the Historical Museum of Bremerhaven; 8-10 minutes to the Weser Forum. The latter, situated on the Old Harbour, where from 1830 onwards tens of thousands of emigrants departed, will be used for the buffet and reception (with US Consul General and Mayor of Bremerhaven) on Monday 12 June.
The conference proper will take place at the Hochschule, now a complex of buildings unique in European architecture. It is situated right on the spot where the famous Bremerhaven 'Auswandererhaus' ('Emigrant House') opened its doors to many thousands of emigrants exactly 150 years ago (parts of the original building were incorporated into the buildings of the Hochschule). From the historical as well as organizational point of view, this is the best place to hold the SGAS Symposium. Workshops can hold 55 to 85 persons (we expect about 150 participants).
In addition, a number of sessions will be held during excursions (organized by ROUTES TO THE ROOTS) to Cloppenburg (OPEN AIR FARM LIFE MUSEUM) and Cuxhaven (HAPAG buildings).
On Friday afternoon, June 16, the conference will move to the
COLUMBUSBAHNHOF II (Columbus Terminal). This is situated right at the
river on premises from where from the 1920s onwards travelers and
emigrants boarded big steamers to cross the Atlantic for the United
States. The terminal is the ideal place for holding the poetry and oral
history programs in the afternoon and for celebrating an exciting
entertainment program in the evening.
From Monday to Friday, 12 to 16 June every morning workshops will take place from 9 to 11.30 h with a 30-minutes coffee break between 10 and 10.30 h. In addition, afternoon sessions will be held on Monday, June 12 and Friday, June 16 from 14 to 16.30 h and 14 to 17.30 h respectively with a break between 15 and 15.30 h. Workshops can hold 80 to 120 participants. As a rule three workshops where three papers are presented will take place simultaneously. Thus altogether more than 40 papers will be given.
