The Forty-eighters were people who fought against the monarchies in Germany in 1848. Though they tried to replace the monarchies with republics that would be more representative of the people, their attempts failed. Some of the Forty-eighters decided to move to America. Many of the Forty-eighters who came to Indianapolis, such as Carl Barus and Clemens Vonnegut, Sr., became leaders in the community. A number of them were also members of the Freethinkers' Society of Indianapolis.
