Freethinker Society of Indianapolis minutes, 1870-1890At its peak, the Freethinkers Society in Indianapolis included about 150 members, many of whom were also members of the Turnverein. In addition to holding social meetings, the Freethinkers sponsored a Sunday School and conducted funerals. While they were viewed suspiciously by conventional religious organizations, the Freethinker Society was undoubtedly the most active intellectual organization in Indianapolis for a number of years.
