Normal College student photographs, ca. 1917

The Normal College of the American Gymnastic Union was founded by the Turners to provide physical education instructors for schools and Turner societies. The Normal College, reflecting the liberal attitudes of the Turners, was coeducational, and women participated in such team sports as basketball and field hockey. While gymnastics was the most important sport for Turners, track and field, fencing, baseball, and other sports were both popular and an important part of the school's curriculum.
