Turner commemorative stamp, 1948The centennial year of the American Turners was 1948. Congressman Harold Youngblood of Michigan, at the urging of American Turners president Carl Weideman, introduced House Joint Resolution 340 in 1948, urging the Post Office to issue a commemorative stamp for the anniversary. The resolution passed both houses of Congress, and the Post Office issued the stamp on November 20, 1948, in Cincinnati, home of the first Turner society. Alvin Meissner, former chief designer at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing and a member of the Turners, designed the stamp.
