Maennerchor sheet music, ca. 1880sSinging societies sprang up throughout the German states in the early years of the nineteenth century, and German immigrants brought this tradition to the United States. The Indianapolis Maennerchor, one of the oldest continuously active singing societies in the country, is part of this tradition. Its concerts featured primarily German songs until World War I, and even after the war, selections from German operas were performed.
