George Santayana: Scepticism and Animal Faith (1923)
Scepticism and Animal Faith serves as an introduction to Santayana's system of philosophy which he explores more fully in a later series of books collectively known as Realms of Being. This philosophy basically states that all knowledge exists in different realms: the realm of essences, or universals; and the realm of matter, or natural objects. It is Santayana's argument that man cannot know the realm of matter, but rather must rely on an animal faith in it.
This is a first edition printed in London and features uncut leaves -- when the book was assembled and bound, the folded sheets of printed text were not cut at the top and sides, as would be done normally. While making it nearly impossible to read the book, this copy serves another important purpose as an artifact: to illustrate a part of the process of bookmaking.
