George Santayana: The Sense of Beauty (1896)
The Sense of Beauty was Santayana's first major publication. In it he discusses aesthetic theory, suggesting a psychological basis for determining beauty. The originality of his thought in this book is that he sought to analyze the "nature and elements of our aesthetic judgment," not simply to determine a standard of beauty separate from the human experience. In essence, Santayana believes that beauty is in the mind of the beholder and wants to know how the mind determines beauty. The item shown below is the first London edition; the collection also contains the first American edition.
