John Saltmarsh: Groanes for Liberty (1646) and A Letter From the Army (1647)
A preacher and religious pamphleteer, John Saltmarsh wrote Groanes for Liberty as a criticism of the Nonconformists, a Calvinist movement which sought a greater degree of religious liberty from the Anglican Church. The differences were primarily settled in 1643 by the Solemn League and Covenant, but Saltmarsh argues here that the same men who had argued in favor of liberty were now depriving others of it.
A Letter From the Army is a pamphlet written by Saltmarsh during the English Civil Wars in support of the King's army and an attempt to dissuade the popular perception that the army was blood-thirsty.
