This four-volume set is the first publication of the manuscript diary of Thomas Burton, a member of the Parliaments of both Oliver and Richard Cromwell from 1656 to 1659. Oliver Cromwell had been a significant force behind the overthrow of the Stuart monarchy during the English Civil War, and served as Lord Protector of the British Commonwealth from 1653 to 1658. Through his diary, Burton documented the daily operation and political struggles of that period of English government. |
