Biographical information: Cecil's professional art career began in the early 1930's in a studio on Market Street in Indianapolis. Mr. Head won the J.I. Holcomb Prize in 1933. In 1934 he represented Indiana in a nationwide exhibition at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington D.C. He constructed airplane components during World War II, and then settled into a career of commercial art and farming.

Significance to Johnson County: Cecil lived in Whiteland. He donated $1,000 to the Southside Art League, Inc. to establish a fine arts scholarship fund. Cecil said, "I think that's about the best thing to happen in Johnson County for the arts in a long time." He believes support for the arts in Johnson County had slacked off in recent years.

Contemporaries of the artist: Cecil shared a space with fellow John Herron Art Institute graduates such as William F. Kaeser and Floyd D. Hopper on Market Street.
