Biographical information: Cecil's professional art career
began in the early 1930's in a studio on Market Street in Indianapolis.
Mr. Head won the J.I. Holcomb Prize in 1933. In 1934 he represented
Indiana in a nationwide exhibition at the Corcoran Gallery in
Washington D.C. He constructed airplane components during World
War II, and then settled into a career of commercial art and farming.
Significance to Johnson County: Cecil lived in Whiteland.
He donated $1,000 to the Southside Art League, Inc. to establish
a fine arts scholarship fund. Cecil said, "I think that's about
the best thing to happen in Johnson County for the arts in a long
time." He believes support for the arts in Johnson County had
slacked off in recent years.
Contemporaries of the artist: Cecil shared a space with
fellow John Herron Art Institute graduates such as William F.
Kaeser and Floyd D. Hopper on Market Street.
