39. In German-language schools, ethnic heritage maintenance and loyalty to America went hand in hand. In an intermediate textbook of the Evangelische Gemeinschaft in Cleveland (ca. 1880) we read: "The Flag. High in the air the flag is waving. It is the symbol of our country and it is the most beautiful flag in the world."
