Open access (OA) is an approach to sharing scholarly literature “online, free of charge, and free of most copyright and licensing restrictions” (Peter Suber, Open Access). Any work in digital form can be open access when copyrights allow. IU Indianapolis and its libraries support open access approaches to scholarly dissemination in a variety of ways, including:
- IU Indianapolis Open Access Policy: a faculty council adopted a policy enabling the library to make scholarly articles free to any reader in IU Indianapolis ScholarWorks. Prior to the campus-wide policy, Library Faculty adopted an OA Mandate in 2009. IU Indianapolis is a founding member of the Coalition of Open Access Policy Institutions.
- IU Indianapolis Open Access Publishing Fund: a limited fund, supporting publication fees in eligible journals.
- IU Indianapolis ScholarWorks: an OA repository for sharing over 25,000 works authored by students, staff, and faculty.
- OA Journals at IU Indianapolis: a peer reviewed, journal publishing service hosted by University Library
- Promotion and Tenure Values: IU Indianapolis acknowledges the value of open access in its promotion and tenure guidance–the libraries support these with workshops and consultations that include new approaches to research metrics.
- Wikimedia: The library contributes and helps others to contribute open knowledge to the widely used open access, encyclopedic sites: Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikidata.
Open knowledge is a core value of the library and represented in many of our services. Get in touch to learn more about open educational resources, open science, data management and sharing, and open digital libraries.
