Damenverein group portrait, 1884The Athenaeum Damenverein is the women’s auxiliary of the Athenaeum Turners, one of the German-American organizations established in Indianapolis in the 1800s. Organized in 1876 to support the Turner society, the Damenverein expanded its activities to include philanthropic and social service work in the community and social and cultural events for their members. The Damenverein is still active. These photographs are part of the Athenaeum Damenverein Records held by the University Library Ruth Lilly Special Collections and Archives.

This project was funded in part by the Hoyt-Reichmann Chair in German-American Studies.
