University Library tries to ensure that you have access to all the materials that you need for your research. We provide several easy and ethical options to get you articles, books, and other items not available at UL.
If you need an article, start with the OpenILL search below. This will look for copies at University Library and in open access repositories. It also helps to submit an ILL request if a copy is not immediately available.
Log-in to our Interlibrary Loan (ILL system) to request books or other materials not available through OpenILL. ILLis also where you can track active requests, view and download requested copies, and manage loans.

If you need an article or book chapter, our OpenILL request form that will attempt to locate an available copy before sending the request to other libraries. It's a relatively new tool, so please let us know if it links you to the wrong article.

Borrowing from Other Libraries
The Interlibrary Loan service (ILL) allows current IU Indianapolis faculty, staff, and students affiliated with University Library or the Herron School of Art Library to borrow materials not owned by the library.
In addition to Interlibrary Loan, the library offers the Article Delivery Service, which allows current faculty, staff, and students affiliated with University Library to request articles from within the Library’s print collection. Articles are scanned and delivered to the user’s ILL account.
Interlibrary Loan and Article Delivery Service requesting is done through the same online system, ILLiad. Borrowing from University Library
Other libraries or organizations can request materials owned by University Library or the Herron School of Art Library. You can find detailed information on How to Borrow from Us.
This service is only available to other libraries or organizations. We do not accept interlibrary loan requests from individuals. If you're an Indiana resident, you may apply for an IU Libraries Borrower's Card. If you are not an Indiana resident living in the Indianapolis area, please contact the interlibrary loan office of your local public or academic library.
